Georgia Department of Labor says it’s hiring staff to deal with appeals backlog that has left many without benefits

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) has announced that it is hiring additional staff to address a backlog of appeals cases that have left many people without unemployment benefits.

The backlog of cases has been a major issue for many Georgians who have been waiting for weeks or even months to receive benefits that they are entitled to. The GDOL has reported that they have received over 50,000 appeals since the start of the pandemic, and the number of cases continues to grow.

In response to the backlog, the GDOL is taking steps to hire additional staff to help process the appeals in a timely manner. The department is also implementing new technology to streamline the appeals process and reduce the backlog.

Many people who have been without benefits due to the backlog have expressed frustration and concern over the delays. Some have had to rely on other sources of income or assistance from family and friends to make ends meet.

The GDOL is urging anyone who is waiting for an appeal decision to be patient and assured that they are working to resolve the backlog as quickly as possible. In the meantime, they are encouraged to continue filing their weekly certifications to ensure that they receive their benefits once the appeal is resolved.
