A new task force has been established in San Diego aimed at addressing chronic crime among the city’s unhoused population.
The task force, known as the Unhoused Community Crime Reduction Task Force, was announced on Wednesday by San Diego City Council members.
The task force will work to identify individuals who are repeatedly committing crimes while experiencing homelessness and get them connected with services to address the root causes of their behavior.
Councilmember Mark Kersey, who chairs the city’s Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, said in a statement that the task force will provide a “comprehensive approach” to addressing crime within the unhoused community.
The task force is made up of representatives from various city agencies, including the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, and the city’s Homeless Outreach Teams.
By focusing on individuals who repeatedly commit crimes, the task force aims to reduce criminal activity in the city while also providing support and resources to those who are experiencing homelessness.
The establishment of the task force comes as San Diego continues to grapple with issues related to homelessness and crime in the city. Officials hope that this new initiative will help to address these challenges and improve public safety for all residents.
