At Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, paramedics have started a groundbreaking program that allows them to administer blood transfusions to critically injured patients on the scene of an emergency.
This initiative, known as the Prehospital Trauma Triage program, allows paramedics to administer blood to patients who are in danger of bleeding to death before they even reach the hospital. The program has been made possible through a partnership between Grady Memorial Hospital and the Red Cross.
According to Dr. Ron Walroth, medical director for Grady EMS, “This will save lives.” By providing blood transfusions in the field, paramedics can help stabilize patients and increase their chances of survival.
This program is one of a kind in the United States and has the potential to revolutionize emergency medical care. With this new capability, paramedics at Grady Memorial Hospital are better equipped to handle the most critical and life-threatening emergencies.
